May the Best Researcher Win...

Hey everybody,
So here is the link to my elevator pitch on YouTube.
Research Elevator Pitch
I hope that I receive the imaginary funding; however I know that there will be some tough competition to win. That being said, may the best researcher win...

  1. Brian -- I think the content of your pitch was impeccable. You clearly articulate the context and significance of your research, as well as explain what you'll be doing in your methods and why. I think the clarity in your methods is something that sets you apart from other elevator pitches. Also, you looked really sharp with your suit jacket and tie!

I do, however, think that you reading your presentation was a little too obvious, and I also believe that you need to work on speaking with more intonations and passion to help with the level of audience engagement. Furthermore, it'd be nice for you to make use of some visual accompaniment.

  2. BRIAN,

That suit though. ;). Overall, I think the information you provided in your speech was on point. The only thing I noticed was that you could have expanded more upon your methods section, explaining how you plan on combining the surveys and data analysis you will conduct. However, as we are still doing the methods section, I completely understand why you might not have gone into complete depth.

I think the biggest thing you need to work on for your elevator pitch is how you actually present the information. Your voice is too soft, and I can hear you breathing quite heavily as you give your speech. You need to practice more and sound more natural in front of a camera because for the AP, its essential that you come across as confident in your own research to explain it more effectively and convince others of its value. Also, I agree with Mrs. Haag in that you need to make it less obvious that your reading from a script. This won't be a problem for the presentation, but I think eye contact is always an important thing to keep in mind.

  3. Just an interesting piece of information to start this off, if you take Akash's video and yours, put your speed on 2x, you end up with about the same speaking speed. I don't know what you'll do with this information, but I thought I'd share anyway.

Moving on to the actual presentation, I think you could have done a slightly better job with conveying the significance, but I know we didn't have much time, so that's alright. I actually really liked everything else you did, but maybe speak with a little more emphasis (I'm being nitpicky cause the rest of it was really good).

Overall, this was really good, and I think you got into the top four!
